F ACING EAST is a world premiere parable by noted LDS author Carol Lynn Pearson.
Ruth and Alex McCormick are an upstanding Mormon couple reeling from the
suicide of their gay son. In FACING EAST, they are stuck between
the comfort of their faith and the unfamiliarity of their new reality
when they meet their son’s partner, Marcus, for the first time. FACING EAST coincides with the 20th anniversary of Pearson’s seminal book Goodbye, I Love You, the story of her life with her gay husband Gerald, their 12-year Mormon temple marriage, four children, divorce, ongoing friendship, and his death from AIDS in her home, where she cared for him. Mormonism is the perfect place to examine the issues surrounding religion and homosexuality. Pearson’s new book, NO MORE GOODBYES: CIRCLING THE WAGONS AROUND OUR GAY LOVED ONES, will be available at performances of FACING EAST. A collection of goodbyes said to gay and lesbian people in the name of religion, the book also includes hopeful stories of Mormon families refusing to let anything come between them and their family members. |

REVIEWS:
“A tightly-wound domestic
tragedy…freshly relevant...dares to ask important questions about
faith, death and survival.”—Salt Lake Tribune
“May well be the best thing Carol
Lynn Pearson has ever written…[in her] eloquent, tightly written
script…there is very little finger-pointing, but plenty of fodder
for healthy debate.” –Deseret Morning News
AUDIENCE RESPONSE:
“The theatre was packed with so much
emotion you could cut it with a knife. Every one there, I'm
sure, had a story--of pain, of betrayal, of confusion, of sacrifice
and the struggle for love. They were looking to find redemption,
hope, and searing honesty, no matter what the cost. Thank you for
holding nothing back. You never let up, except for an occasional
gift of humor so we could breath. There was a shared compassion that
held us in a place beyond words. It was an amazing experience to be
part of.” --Jan
